トーマス・コン(1950-2023 年)は、北朝鮮に生まれ、アメリカ・シカゴを拠点に活動したアーティストであり、コンビニエンスストアオーナーでした。

コンがシカゴ郊外で営んでいた小さなコンビニエンスストア「KIM’S CORNER FOOD」の店内を飾り付けるため、60 歳を過ぎてから作り始めた小さなコラージュ。お菓子や煙草の空き箱、包み紙、新聞や雑誌の切り抜き、ビニール袋、不要になったダンボールなど、身近にあるものを使ったコラージュは、いつしか店内を埋め尽くし、お店そのものをアート作品に、そして彼をアーティストに変えました。

本展では、彼が遺した膨大な作品群の一部と、一点もののアートブック、惜しまれつつ閉店し 「KIM’S CORNER FOOD」のアーカイブ資料を展示いたします。コンは、今年 5 月に亡くなる直前まで、自身の店に立ち続けました。彼がレジカウンターで作り続けた作品からは、「Be Happy」 のキャッチフレーズとともに、純粋でポジティブなメッセージを受け取っていただけるでしょう。

Thomas Kong (1950-2023) was an artist and convenience store owner born in North Korea and based in Chicago, IL, USA. Kong began making small collage artworks in his sixties to decorate the interior of KIM’S CORNER FOOD, a bodega he ran in the Rogers Park area of Chicago. Kong made collages with everyday items that could be found in the store, including cigarette boxes, plastic bags, newspaper and magazine clippings, chip bags, cardboard boxes, etc. His works soon filled the store, turning the store itself into a work of art and transforming him into an artist. This exhibition will display a portion of his vast body of work, one-of-a-kind artist books, and archival materials from “KIM’S CORNER FOOD”, which regrettably closed its doors. Kong continued to work at his store until just before his death in May this year. From these works he created in his late years at the cash register counter, visitors will be surrounded by the catchphrase “Be Happy”, which Kong enjoyed using.
